The Seaside Fleet: Information (OPAF) September 2021.

In early September, I took The Seaside Fleet to a new venue, Angels Gate Park/Cultural Center in San Pedro CA.

This event was different from previous installations. Do to limitations placed on the event by Angel’s Gate Cultural Center I was not able to leave my hand-folded paper boats in their usual manner. Excited to use my creativity and stretch the boundaries of the project, I struck upon the idea of reimagining how I present it as an information booth!

I’m not a stranger to meeting the hand-folded paper boat curious public. In the early 2000s, when the Dreamboat Research Project was still active, I helped at conferences where the team presented their data analysis, by presenting my art and conducting polling interviews with volunteers.

A sample of materials I presented at the OPAF 2021

Under a small tent with a couple of tables, repurposed from other art fairs I’ve been to with my collages, I displayed a variety of materials including:

  • Photos and maps documenting other Seaside Fleet installations - as well as other Paper Boat Sightings I was not involved with.

  • “Ephemera packs” and a display of paper boats from my previous events.

  • Unique paper boats made special for OPAF.

  • Booklets and posters with my paper boat folding instructions.

  • The catalog of my paper boat works that KolajFest published in 2018.

  • Free examples of hand-folded paper boats.

  • A demonstration table where I taught visitors how to fold their own paper boats.

  • An updated version of the DRP classic info gathering poll.
