What I've Been Up To. Productivity
I never expected I would let this blog go as long as I have without working on it. That is the exact opposite of the reason I started it. I have been productive though, and wanted to talk about that here.About the same time I started OneWordLong here, my fiancée and I also started FLIMSpringfield.net, another wordpress blog, to indulge our Simpsons hobby. Over there we recast old and popular movies with Simpsons characters as well as a couple other gimmicks. We also promote our monthly Simpsons trivia night. Both of which have taken off and are getting nice response. So, in response I've been dedicating more time to it instead of this one. However, that isn't the only thing keeping me away. For the past couple months I was also busy working on a pair of essays. One is ultimately meant to wind up here; in it I'm about artists appropriating other creators work, when it is good, when it goes too far, and when it is bad. I work in collage a lot, and it is a big part of the way I think and express my ideas, so it matters to me. It is really hard to be on the pro side though though, because of bad examples in the field, and a history of poorly defended work. I've hit a brick wall in my writing, and don't want to put anything up until it is ready, so that has kept me from posting here. I think I'm going to set it aside for now, and let the ideas jell a more in my head. I don't know why it's so hard though, I've been thinking about this for years now and thought I'd have the words I want ready to go.Aside from that writer's block, I have had success on another project. There's a 'zine called The Atomic Elbow, which covers all aspects of the performance.I've enjoyed reading it for about a year, and in April I pitched some article ideas to the editor. One idea was accepted and I've spend the last couple months attending shows and getting my report in order. The piece was just published and is available to purchase -> here. There's a lot of good stuff in the issue, my piece is about comparing three different wrestling promotions in my town. Go order it!, not just for me but to read some really fun writing that supports creative examination of this bizarre cultural niche, which it really needs.Aside from that, I haven't been making any visual art, but I did put this gif together over the weekend...
